At
the end of the year we feel it almost compulsory to find some time to put
together a blog. Actually, if you have overlooked it, we recently produced also
another blog summarising Domen's new position as editor of BirdLife Slovenia's magazine Svet ptic. Regarding wildlife, fortunately we have already summed up a lot of what was
going on this year in our
Spring season review, featuring the 2024 highlights from spring to early summer. The second part of the year was more quiet and mostly involved outings
in our free time around the Karst and the Dinaric mountains close to
home. Despite our more relaxed "family tempo" we still managed to see
interesting stuff. So here are some photos from the summer to the winter
season of 2024. Enjoy!

our doorsteps.

Two views of the same species: Beefsteak Fungus Fistulina hepatica in the oak forests near Divača, October. Note the second pic - is there anything else more "karstic" in nature than this fungus, perfectly resembling our typical kraški pršut (dry-cured ham)?
|
|
Coral Tooth Fungus Hericium coralloides, Divača, October. Surely the most amazing find of the season in our local oak forest - a dead Turkey Oak Quercus cerris infested with some amazing specimens of this rare fungus. We've never found any Hericium in the Karst before, although we frequently stick to places with dead wood.

Golden Eagle Aquila chrysaetos carrying part of a carcass from the Karst towards the Nanos plateau, October.

|
Shortly after "flushing" a Brown Bear Ursus arctos through the mugo
pines on the Snežnik plateau. The encounter was so brief that the only
photo I could take was a selfie! First I saw some pine branches waving
violently, then heard the bear panting and finally saw it running away
at full speed. One of those typical adrenaline-filled encounters from
the Dinaric forests!
|
|
Another giant: Artist's Bracket Ganoderma applanatum, Snežnik plateau, October. There's always plenty of large-sized bracket fungi in old-growth forests!
|
|
Ural Owl Strix uralensis, Karst, October.

Showing a Ural Owl Strix uralensis
to some visiting friends in Snežnik's forests in November. After an
unsuccessful day searching for it, we spotted this Ural Owl at sunset,
while driving back home on a forest road. We watched the bird for a long time from the
car, as it hunted rodents just along the road!
|
|
Unusual autumn blooming of Mountain Pasqueflower Pulsatilla montana in the Karst, November.

Black Pine Down! Domen's little contribution to the preservation of Karst's dry grasslands: using non-native Black Pines Pinus nigra for our Christmas needs!
