Had a couple of interesting birds this afternoon at Isola della Cona. My first PURPLE HERON of the season sat in a tree for about one hour before flying off (see pic above). Highlights also included 4 OYSTERCATCHERS flying over the Quarantia canal, a SPOTTED CRAKE (I'm becoming a master with these birds!), a flock of 20-25 Whimbrels (on the mudflats), a calling Little Owl by the visitor center and a RAVEN flying by (rare within the reserve).
Lots of other commoner birds were around as well: 20-30 Swallows, Snipe, +100 Ruffs, 3 Marsh Harriers, Garganey, 6-7 Black-winged Stilts, migrant Blackcaps (the bushes were full!), 2 Wood Sandpipers, Red-breasted Merganser (out on the sea), 6 Greenshanks, 3 Spotted Redshanks, 1 Green Sandipier, 2 Common Redshanks, +200 Dunlins on the mudflats, 1 Little Ringed Plovers, a few Yellow Wagtails, 1 Water Rail and a flock of 6-7 Meadow Pipits.
Not too bad for an "easy" afternoon.
